Locked Out of Your House? Here’s What You Need to Do

Locked Out of Your House- Here's What You Need to DoGetting locked out of your house is something that just about everyone will experience at least once in their lives. Of course, this unfortunate occurrence is not something you want to have happen on a regular basis, but, when it does happen, here’s how to handle it.

Stay Calm

When you are locked out of your house, the most important thing you can do is to stay calm. While it may be tempting to get stressed out, this really will not help the situation and will only make you feel worse. Take a few deep breaths to help you stay calm and rational so that you can deal with the situation effectively.

Don’t Try to Break In

Even if you are in an incredible hurry to get back in, don’t try to break into your house. This could be potentially dangerous and could result in you injuring yourself. For example, if you break a window to get in, you could cut yourself on the broken glass. Not to mention that your neighbours might call the police and you’ll have to deal with the cost of fixing the broken window. Similarly, trying to climb in through an open window could also result in you falling and hurting yourself. Instead of trying to break in, it is best to just wait for the professionals.

Call a Locksmith

A mobile locksmith will be able to get you back into your house quickly and safely, so this should be your first call. If your phone is inside your home, ask a neighbour if you can use theirs. We’ve all been there at some point, so most people will have no problem helping you out in your time of need.

Go Somewhere Safe

Depending on where you live, it may or may not be safe to stay waiting at your doorstep. Also, depending on the time of year, the weather may not allow it either. Ask a neighbour if you can wait for the locksmith inside their home. You can also head to a nearby business to wait in safety. Just make sure that you choose somewhere that is close to your home so that you can get back quickly when the locksmith arrives. You don’t want to leave them waiting at your home for you for very long, so get back as quickly as you can.

Stash a Key

To prevent this from happening to you again in the future, you may wish to hide a key somewhere outside of your home. However, it is important to be aware that those who might want to try to break into your house will likely check for a hidden key to give them easy access. Be sure to hide it well. You can buy items like key safes which you can attach to the side of your house and require a pin code or combination code to open.
